At VGHS, we accomplish our mission by creating a compelling, project-based educational environment. Major intent is put toward developing critical thinking, social justice, personal character, and community membership.
Vista Grande High School (VGHS) opened its doors in Fall 2006 and now enrolls over 90 high school students in grades 9-12.
VGHS is an innovative public charter school authorized by the NM Public Education Department and Taos Municipal School District.
We moved into our permanent home at the Celestino Romero Building in August 2012.
VGHS is a small, caring, and highly engaged community.
Vista Grande is an experiential project-based learning school, a year-long learning expedition takes place in each grade level.
The expedition is an engaging interdisciplinary, academically rigorous thematic unit which lasts for a semester (For example: Farming, Sustainability, Disease, Heroes, Art & Activism, and Borders).
Each learning expedition is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and meets all national and state requirements.
The experiential project-based model has been shown to be particularly effective with students who find themselves bored or dissatisfied in traditional school settings.
To motivate and engage students, VGHS emphasizes:
- “hands on” project-based learning
- the workshop model
- a culture of reflection and revision
- wilderness travel
